Martins Dental Partners Blog

Don’t you want an artificial tooth that both looks and functions just like a real tooth?

Are you an adult dealing with tooth loss? If so, then chances are good you want a restoration that will not only look like natural teeth butdental implants will be able to restore function and strength back into your smile. Martins Dental Partners thinks you deserve just that which is why we offer dental implants.

What exactly is a dental implant?

When people realize that an implant is a small metal post the first thing they often wonder is how that will actually be able to replace a missing tooth. After all, a metal post certainly doesn’t look anything like a real tooth. Of course, the implant itself won’t be visible once it’s placed since it’s embedded into the jawbone where it will take on the role of your tooth roots.

How is a dental implant placed?

Our Board Certified Periodontist located in the heart of Beverly, MA, Dr. Valerie Martins, will place the implant into the jawbone during a simple dental procedure. Your mouth will be completely under the effects of local anesthesia so everything will be numb. This means that you won’t feel any discomfort while your implant or implants are being placed.

Once the implant is placed, the hard part is now over. Next, we just give the jawbone the time it needs to heal. Over the course of a few months, the bone will heal and grow around the implant, making it a permanent dental restoration. The implant is the most reliable and strongest foundation from which to support a false tooth and to hold it firmly in place.

Depending on the type of dental implant you get, the implant may also contain an abutment on top of it or the abutment will need to be placed later on. An abutment sits above the gums and attaches to the top of the implant. From there, a dental crown can then be placed over the abutment. The entire purpose of an abutment is to connect the implant with the dental crown.

Endodontists are typically associated with root canals.  Endodontists have at least two years of specialty training focused on working with dental pulp and surrounding tissue. They perform complicated dental root canals -- removing unhealthy pulp from the bottom of a tooth then filling and sealing the hole. Root canals allow patients to keep the tooth alive and therefore save teeth that would have otherwise been removed.

If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain, have injured a tooth or there’s swelling around your teeth or gums a General Dentist may refer you to an Endodontist since they’re experts at diagnosing the root cause of tooth pain and performing complicated procedures relating to the inside of your teeth.

Do you avoid the Dentist?  Does the thought of sitting in a Dental Chair give you anxiety?  You’re not alone -- many people are afraid of the Dentist!  Some will endure a painful toothache for weeks or months to avoid having to step foot in a Dental Office.

It doesn’t have to be this way and Sedation Dentistry at Martins Dental Partners in Beverly, Massachusetts may be the answer!  Martins Dental Partners offers multiple Sedation Dentistry options to help patients cope with everything from their regular cleanings to large procedures such Dental Implants.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation Dentistry is the practice of using various types of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures.  The levels of Sedation are as follows:

  • Minimal Sedation: You remain completely awake but are in a relaxed state.
  • Moderate or Conscious Sedation: You’re conscious but extremely relaxed.  You’ll have some recollection of your experience but it will likely be limited.
  • Deep Sedation: You’re on the edge of Consciousness but can be awakened quickly if needed.  You will not remember much, if any, of the procedure.

What Types of Sedation Options are Available?

  • Nitrous Oxide (i.e. "laughing gas"):  The most commonly used medicine to achieve Minimal Sedation is Nitrous Oxide.  Nitrous Oxide, which is a gas that helps patients relax, is combined with oxygen and administered using a mask placed over the patient’s nose. The dentist can control the amount of gas administered to the patient and the gas typically wears of quickly once the Doctor has stopped administering it.
  • Oral Sedation: Oral Sedation can range from Minimal to Moderate depending on the drug and dosage being used.  Typically, the drug will come in the form of a pill and will be taken 1-2 hours prior to the procedure.  If Minimal Sedation is desired, the dosage provided will cause drowsiness but allow the patient to remain completely awake.  If Moderate sedation is needed, a larger dose can further relax the patient and even enable the patient to fall asleep during the procedure.
  • IV Sedation:  To achieve Moderate to Deep Sedation, IV Sedation can be used.  With IV Sedation, the patient receives a Sedative drug through an IV.  Because the IV introduces the Sedative directly into the blood stream it works very quickly.  IV Sedation also allows the Doctor to adjust the level of Sedation as needed by increasing or decreasing the amount of Sedative being delivered to the patient.  IV Sedation is performed by our partner, Dr. Corey Collins, a board certified anesthesiologist trained in administering IV Sedation and monitoring the patient's safety throughout their procedure.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for you?

Martins Dental Partners recommends a comprehensive exam and discussion regarding the patient’s personal goals as well as the benefits and risks of Sedation Dentistry.  Some of the common reasons patients choose Sedation Dentistry are:

  • The patient has a fear of the Dentist that prevents them from visiting a Dentist for regular care or necessary treatment
  • The patient needs to undergo an invasive or time consuming dental procedure
  • The patient has difficulty coping with dental procedures due to severe gag-reflex

Martins Dental Partners is built upon the philosophy that a relaxing and enjoyable dental visit is possible.  In support of this mission, we are proud to offer a range of Sedation Dentistry options for those patients who’ve avoided dental treatment due to anxiety or simply prefer not to actively participate in their dental experience.  Whether you need wisdom teeth extractions, invasive dental procedures or are merely afraid of “the chair”, Dr. Valerie Martins and the team at Martins Dental Partners can provide several Sedation Dentistry options to enable you to relax and have your dental work completed in a stress-free and safe environment.

Are you too embarrassed to wear metal braces? You can straighten your smile without hiding it. Invisalign is the clear alternative to metal invisalignbraces. Dr. Valerie Martins, Dr. Sukhpreet Heer, and Dr. Suzanne Fisher at Martins Dental Partners in Beverly, MA, offer a complete range of General and Cosmetic Dental Services including Invisalign.

Here are some reasons to consider Invisalign:

  • Invisalign is Comfortable- While traditional braces are effective in repositioning the teeth, they can be uncomfortable to wear and they can irritate your gums. Invisalign aligners are made from a BPA-free thermoplastic material. The aligners are smooth and comfortable to wear, so you will be able to wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day without much effort.
  • Invisalign is Removable- Invisalign aligners are not only comfortable to wear, they're also removable. Invisalign will straighten your teeth without the restrictions that come with traditional braces. With metal braces, you may have to avoid eating certain foods because they can become stuck in your braces. With Invisalign, you will be able to eat all your favorite foods and brush and floss as you normally would.
  • Invisalign is Invisible- You can straighten your teeth without a mouthful of metal. Many individuals love the fact that Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. There are no metal wires or brackets and nobody will notice that you're wearing them, making Invisalign perfect for your lifestyle. Plus, since your dental visits during treatment won't involve wire or metal adjustments, you'll likely spend less time in the dentist's chair.

Millions of people from across the globe have straightened their smiles with Invisalign. Perhaps it's time you joined them? Remember, a better life starts with a beautiful smile!
