What to Expect at a Dental Checkup
For many people, visiting the dentist is an anxiety-inducing experience. One way to take the edge off your nerves is knowing what to expect so there are no surprises. Don’t worry, dentists aren’t in business to scare you or cause you pain. At Martins Dental Partners, our top priorities are providing the best possible clinical care and making our patients comfortable and at ease throughout their visit. We are happy to explain to you each of our procedures and why we perform them.
Maintaining good brushing and flossing habits at home is very important to keep your teeth and gums healthy. But even if you do everything right, it’s still important to come in for your in-office cleaning every six months. Our trained and experienced staff members have access to special tools to remove stubborn plaque and tartar, including under the gumline. We are able to clean areas that your toothbrush at home can’t reach. We will also give you a professional flossing and polish your teeth with a special toothpaste.
The Visual Exam
Our dental professionals will give your mouth a thorough examination, looking for indications of gum disease and tooth decay. We can spot issues very early on and before the onset of symptoms, which makes treatment easier and less invasive. We will also check your mouth for signs of oral cancer.
Even with our practiced eyes, we can’t see problems lurking beneath the surface. Periodically, we will take dental X-rays to look for issues like bone loss, impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts, and decay that’s hidden between teeth. We use modern digital X-rays, which expose you to very little radiation and are completely safe.
Depending on your age and individual circumstances, we may suggest other preventative and protective measures.
- Sealants are typically recommended for kids when their permanent molars and premolars come in. This plastic-like coating is bonded to the teeth and acts as a shield against destructive acids and bacteria. Sealants have been shown to reduce the likelihood of cavities in children significantly.
- As you may know, fluoride is an essential mineral for your dental health. It keeps the tooth enamel strong and able to resist decay-causing bacteria. We offer in-office fluoride treatments to help strengthen your teeth and keep them healthy.
- If you or your child plays sports, a custom mouthguard can protect the teeth and gums in case of impact. While drugstores do offer over-the-counter mouthguards, ours are custom-fitted to your mouth so that they are more comfortable and offer better protection.
- We also offer comfortable, custom mouthguards for patients who have problems with grinding and clenching their teeth as they sleep. Worn at night, these mouthguards hold the jaw in position and prevent destructive grinding.
Even if your teeth and gums feel and look fine, it’s important to visit us twice a year for a cleaning and examination. Call the Beverly, MA office of Martins Dental Partners at (978) 288-1946 or use our online form to request an appointment.
