When it comes to dental exams, one of the first things we do is once the patient has filled out all the paperwork at the front, including their health history, we get them to the back and take a full series of X-rays if needed. Once those X-rays are taken, I come in and take a look, and before I even touch the patient’s mouth, or look at the X-rays, one of the first things we do is have a conversation with our patients to see what really brought them in. What is their end goal? What are their immediate short-term goals? Just get an idea before we start taking a look and breaking things down into smaller segments.
So once we have that conversation with the patient, then we start taking a look at that patient’s mouth, and we do an oral cancer screening, do a head and neck exam, and then finally take a look at the teeth and the gums. We also supplement our exam with some intraoral photos, so that way I can show the patient exactly what I see. So it’s easier for the patient to understand why the treatment we’re recommending is actually needed for the patient.
